How to Park and Forward a Number
Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is how the NumberGarage™ service works. We have two levels of service for you to take advantage of: Park or Forward.
When you signup for a NumberGarage account:
- NumberGarage™ will send a port request to your current carrier, and then we send you a simple email that says, "port request submitted".
- We wait for your current carrier to respond to the port request. They usually respond within a few business days with a release date of your number. We send you another email with notification of the release date. Not all carriers provide a release date, and you might not receive this email of the release date.
- When your port request completes ... we send you an email that the "port has completed."
- NumberGarage invoices are emailed on the day you signup each month. We place a "PAID" stamp on the invoice as NumberGarage accounts are subscription accounts.
NOTE: Make sure that all of the information you provide to NumberGarage is correct and current. This will prevent delays in your port request. Some carriers move faster then others in responding to their customers port requests. With many of the larger carriers the process is automated.
- All "orders" should be removed from the telephone number account. Meaning, that if you have told your carrier to keep you locked into a long distance plan, you need to remove this PIC Freeze (term used by the carriers to prevent long distance switching).
- Do NOT cancel your account before submitting your port request with NumberGarage. We recommend that you call the losing carrier to confirm the number has released after we confirm the port has completed. Just to make sure you are no longer billed, etc.
- When you port away from NumberGarage™ ... just contact your NEW carrier. Let them know you want to port a number over from NumberGarage. When the NEW carrier confirms the port has completed follow up with us to let us know you have moved on. We too want to make sure you are no longer billed by us, and that all is well in your port.
Why Would I Need This Service?
There are so many reasons to park or forward a number. Find your own reason, and then tell us all about it.
The necessity that became NumberGarage™:
My reason was simple — I moved out of my house temporarily for a construction project but wanted to keep my home phone number and I asked "why not?" I transferred my home number to my cell phone for 10 months, then moved back into my house. I have since reverted the service and moved my home number back to a traditional landline service. But if I move again, you can bet I'll take my number with me! UPDATE: I have ported back to NumberGarage™, and now all calls go to my wife's cell phone.
Why would I just Park my number with no telephone service?
There may be a telephone number that you want to hang onto and use in the future. The Park service feature will allow you to truly own the number. You can port the number out to traditional phone service, or cell service when you are ready to use the number again.
We have many customers who travel the world for extended periods of time. They usually forward their calls to other web based telephone numbers. Then, when they return home ... they port away to a new service provider.
Adopting a Cell Phone for your primary phone number?
Not sure if you want to let that home number go away permanently? Then the Forward service will ensure people still reach you.
Our Chief Mechanic forwards his home phone number calls to his wife's cell phone. He then updates that FORWARD TO number in his NumberGarage account periodically by forwarding calls to his cell number.
Your phone number can be your identity.
Wouldn't it be fun if you could be known as "867-5309" instead of "Jenny"? Now you can, no matter where you live with the Forward service from NumberGarage™.
Your old home phone number is NOT compatible with your NEW home location.
Are you moving to a new home in the same city? There are rate exchanges right next to one another in many cities. One rate exchange might not be serviceable in another local area, and vise versa. NumberGarage™ can solve this problem by forwarding calls to the old number over to the new number.
Are you "cutting expenses" and don't want to lose the home telephone number?
Many NumberGarage™ customers enjoy the benefits of what NumberGarage™ provides ... captured calls for $9.95 per month. Many people continue to pay for their monthly telephone bill "just in case" someone calls.
My home phone is gone, and my voicemails are now emails thanks to NumberGarage forwarding calls to my home number to my Google Voice number.
